Agontheos is a board game of exploration and conflict
for two to four players. Each player must balance the search for
minions and useful resources with the need to develope strategic
positioning of one's pieces. Capturing occurs as it does in traditional
chess, but Agontheos has many random elements that prevent chess-like
repetitiveness. Victory conditions, board layout, and rule sets
are all decided before the game and offer a huge number of strategic
possibilities, although the core rules are very simple and easy
to master.
The game above is Agontheos at it's largest scale,
with four players using the entire board. This game is well under
way, with many pieces already vanquished to the Underworld. This
game took about three hours to complete.
Using a smaller portion of the board allows for quicker
games. The standard two player game takes an average of twenty
minutes and uses about a third of the board. The following images
show highlights of a contest between Ares and Hephaestos.
Before the first turn...
Three turns into the game Ares has recruited four pieces
while Hephaestos has three.
By turn eleven the carnage is in full swing. Several
pieces sit in the Underworld and a fierce contest for the center
ground is underway.
Atlas has captured Ares and Hephaestos wins. The Underworld
is littered with fallen pieces and used artifacts. As often happens,
the board was never fully explored.
The above image shows the state of the Water player's
domain midway through the first move. Hades has recruited a mortal
hero and the monster Chimaera.
The home tile of the Gorgons and my prototype copper
Gorgon token. The reverse of the coin shows the movement potential
of any given piece.
